SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 New) – The University of Utah Hospital is about to get even bigger, as it will be adding an additional 29,000 sq. ft. to its facility.
This expansion is expected to bring 38 new beds to the hospital and it is important to them for several reason, primarily, it will help improve patient care.
Over the last 12 months the hospitals acute care unit has been running above capacity with 89% of their beds in use.
This expansion is expected to help alleviate crowding in the university’s flagship medical center’s emergency department and critical care units, which will allow the hospital to keep patients in recovery in the facility rather than sending them to other hospitals when crowding occurs.
It will also give patients the time and space they need to heal.
The hospital will begin moving patients into the new space on Monday. The hospital has also hired an additional 100 new employees for this expansion.
